If you have chosen granite for your countertop then choosing a granite backsplash can create a perfect natural stone pairing. Keep these tips in mind from the experts at StoneSense, the premiere supplier of natural stone countertops in Ottawa, when choosing a backsplash for your kitchen or bathroom.
A backsplash can be breathtaking but it serves a purpose in addition to being decorative. Water is the main reason for installing a backsplash. It often splashes onto the wall above the countertop and below the cabinets. This can stain the wall – especially if food accompanies the water – and damage it, too. Water can also run into the dark space between the countertop and the wall resulting in moisture becoming trapped in that area. This can lead to the formation of mold. Mold is nasty.
The nitty-gritty behind the granite wow factor
One of the benefits of having both a granite countertop and backsplash is that they can both be sourced from the same slab. This will result in a consistent appearance. The two will have the same thickness, too, allowing a better caulk seal where they meet and where the backsplash meets the wall. As well, the backsplash will better cover the gaps exposed if the wall behind the countertop is not straight. Finally, the backsplash may be installed by the same company that installs the countertop.
The granite experts at StoneSense, your preferred source for Ottawa natural stone countertops, will be happy to discuss backsplash installation details with you. In the meantime, let’s return to the nitty-gritty.
Backsplash height is typically either four inches – standard – or up to the base of the cabinets – full height. If you choose granite for both the countertop and the backsplash, choosing full height for the latter will make quite a statement. It may be better to choose the granite from a slab with a complementary colour or grain, however, or from another natural stone, to make the statement less bold.
A good compromise is to install a full height backsplash behind the stove and sink and a standard height one above the countertop elsewhere.
The advantage of a standard backsplash height is that it is relatively inexpensive. Having decided to purchase a granite countertop the cost of the backsplash will be only marginally more.
Bathrooms, being smaller than kitchens, will often feature a standard height backsplash.
Choosing a granite backsplash will ensure you enjoy the wonderful qualities of granite throughout your kitchen or bathroom. (See our previous blog “Does your Kitchen Countertop Meet Your Needs”.) It resists heat, stains and scratches. It is easily wiped clean with a granite-friendly cleanser. Being porous, though, granite requires regular sealing.
Of course, it is not necessary to pair a granite countertop with a granite backsplash. A variety of other quality materials exists from which to obtain a beautiful backsplash, from other natural stone – such as marble and quartz – to glass mosaic tile, stainless steel and traditional ceramic tile.
